UK to Dubai
How to get a job in Dubai from the UK (2026)
Most British citizens get a job in Dubai by securing an offer first: the employer then arranges a work permit from the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation and a residence visa, which involves a medical test and an Emirates ID. You can get a free visitor visa on arrival for up to 90 days in 180, or apply for a jobseeker visa, but you cannot work until your permit is issued.

Which UAE work visa can a British citizen get?
Dubai follows UAE federal rules on work permits and residence. Work permits come from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), and residence visas from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) or, in Dubai, GDRFA Dubai. These are the routes a UK professional is most likely to use. Check the official pages before you act, because the conditions change.
| Route | Who it suits | Key conditions | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard work visa | Almost everyone moving for a job | The employer applies. MoHRE work permit to recruit from outside the UAE, valid two years, then a residence visa with medical test and Emirates ID | u.ae: Work visa; MoHRE |
| Green visa | Skilled workers, freelancers and the self-employed | A residence route for these groups. Conditions, including salary and qualification rules, are set by ICP and GDRFA Dubai; check them there before applying | u.ae: Work visa; ICP; GDRFA Dubai |
| Golden visa | Investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talent and specialists, top students | Renewable residence for 5 or 10 years with no sponsor. The talent category includes doctors, scientists, executives, PhD holders and specialists in priority scientific and engineering fields | u.ae: Golden visa; ICP |
| Jobseeker visit visa | People who want to job hunt in person | Single trip of 60, 90 or 120 days without a host or sponsor. You cannot work on it | u.ae: Searching for a job; ICP |
| Freelance work permit | Independent professionals selling services | MoHRE permit to work for clients without an employer sponsor or employment contract | u.ae: Work permits; MoHRE |

How does hiring work in Dubai?
The law is simple on one point: under Article 6 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, the UAE Labour Law, nobody may work in the UAE without a valid MoHRE work permit, and employers may not employ anyone without one. So the employer drives the process. Since the Work Bundle launched, permit, residence visa, medical and Emirates ID steps sit on one platform, and the government says this cut processing from 30 working days to 5.
From our time running desks in Dubai, three things shape how hiring actually feels. It moves fast once a client decides, so candidates who can start in 30 days or less win. A lot of mid and senior roles go through agencies and personal networks before, or instead of, a public advert. And offers are discussed as monthly packages, so know your number in dirhams a month.
Two structural points matter. First, people working in free zones are generally not governed by the UAE Labour Law; each free zone authority has its own employment rules and sponsors its employees. Ask which applies to your contract. Second, private companies have Emiratisation percentages to meet under the government's programme to bring UAE nationals into private sector jobs, supported by the Nafis programme. Some roles will be reserved for UAE nationals, and a good recruiter will tell you up front.
Never pay to be hired. The government portal says MoHRE licenses recruitment agencies, that jobseekers are not required to pay any agency because the employer pays, and that anyone asking you for money for a visa or medical is not genuine.

Where are jobs in Dubai advertised?
The UAE government portal lists these channels for jobseekers. Use several at once.
- Private job boards: Bayt, NaukriGulf, FoundItGulf, Gulf News Careers and Laimoon.
- LinkedIn: widely used for professional roles, and every Dubai recruiter will check your profile.
- Licensed recruitment agencies: send your CV to agencies that specialise in your sector. Check the agency is licensed by MoHRE, and never pay a fee.
- Company careers pages: register directly with the employers you want, especially large groups and multinationals.
- Government portals: Dubai Careers for Dubai Government jobs, plus federal and Abu Dhabi government portals.
- Classifieds and job fairs: Khaleej Times and Dubizzle carry vacancies, and fairs such as Careers UAE run through the year.

Can you apply for Dubai jobs from the UK?
Yes, and most UK professionals do. Dubai is three hours ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and four hours ahead in winter, so a morning interview in London is lunchtime in Dubai. That makes video interviews easy to arrange.
Be ready for the questions Dubai recruiters ask in the first call: nationality, current location, visa status, notice period, current salary and expected package. Answer them crisply. On relocation, give a month, say whether family is coming and confirm you understand the employer will sponsor your visa.
Many candidates fly out for final interviews. GOV.UK says British citizens get a free visitor visa on arrival, valid for up to 90 days in a 180-day period. It also warns that working on a visit visa can mean a fine, prison and deportation. If you want longer to job hunt in person, the jobseeker visit visa gives a single trip of 60, 90 or 120 days without a sponsor. Check eligibility with ICP or GDRFA Dubai before you book.
Read the FCDO travel advice for the UAE before you travel or sign. At the time of writing it does not advise against travel to the UAE, but it reports regional tensions, including strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran in a number of locations across the region since 8 July 2026, and warns of possible flight cancellations and airspace closures. The advice changes, so check the current version.

What does UAE labour law say about probation and notice?
Private sector jobs on the mainland fall under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, in force since 2 February 2022. These are the points candidates ask us about most.
- Contracts are fixed term and can be renewed.
- Probation cannot exceed six months. An employer ending your contract in probation must give 14 days' written notice.
- If you resign in probation to join another UAE employer, you must give at least one month's notice. If you resign to leave the UAE, 14 days.
- Resigning in probation can bar you from a new work permit for one year from departure, unless the employer breached the contract.
- After probation, notice must be at least 30 days and no more than 90, and the same for both sides unless it favours the worker.
- Non-compete clauses are allowed but limited to two years after the contract ends.
- Free zone jobs follow the free zone's own employment rules instead.

Do you need your UK degree attested for a Dubai job?
Usually, for a professional role. MoHRE classes work as skilled only where the worker is in one of the top five professional levels, holds a qualification above secondary level attested by the competent authorities, and earns at least AED 4,000 a month.
For a UK degree, start in the UK. GOV.UK says a qualification certificate can be legalised once certified by a UK notary or solicitor, and the FCDO Legalisation Office charges £45 per document for a paper apostille or £35 for an e-Apostille. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests documents issued abroad through UAE missions, so the next stop is the UAE Embassy in London. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research also issues recognition reports for foreign degrees, used for employment and visas. Ask your employer which of these they need, and whether any further attestation is needed once you are in the UAE, because requirements differ by role.
Regulated professions need more. A work permit is only issued if the worker meets the licensing conditions for that profession, so doctors, nurses, lawyers and other licensed professionals should start the relevant UAE licence early. GOV.UK also suggests checking with the British Council in the UAE whether your UK qualifications are recognised.

How long does it take to get a job in Dubai from the UK?
Allow two to four months from first application to starting work for a typical professional role. Notice periods and document attestation usually take longer than the visa itself.
- Weeks 1 to 2: rewrite your CV for Dubai, set up job alerts, contact two or three specialist agencies and ask a likely employer which documents they will need attested.
- Weeks 1 to 6: get your degree certified, apostilled and attested if required, in parallel with applying.
- Weeks 2 to 10: video interviews, then a final round, often in person on a visitor visa.
- Offer: check the package, contract type, probation and notice terms, and whether the employer is mainland or free zone.
- Permits: the employer applies for your work permit and entry permit. The government says the Work Bundle has cut processing to 5 working days.
- Arrival: medical test, Emirates ID biometrics and residence visa issue. Do not start work until the permit is in place.

Do you pay income tax in Dubai, and which sectors are hiring?
GOV.UK confirms the UAE does not have income tax on salaries or wages, though there may be taxes on some goods and services, municipal taxes and customs duties. The UK has a double taxation agreement with the UAE. Get professional advice on your UK tax position before you leave.
The UAE does not publish a shortage occupation list in the way Singapore or the UK do, so we will not give you a ranked list of in-demand jobs. The clearest official signal is the Golden visa, whose talent category names doctors, scientists, inventors, executives, PhD holders and specialists in priority scientific and engineering fields. If you sit in one of those groups, check whether you qualify for long-term residence in your own right.

FAQ
Working in Dubai: common questions
Can I move to Dubai and look for a job?
Yes, but you cannot work until a work permit is issued. British citizens get a free visitor visa on arrival for up to 90 days in 180, and the jobseeker visit visa allows a single trip of 60, 90 or 120 days without a sponsor.
Do British citizens need a visa to work in Dubai?
Yes. Everyone working in the UAE needs a MoHRE work permit and a residence visa. In most cases your employer applies for both after you accept an offer.
Is there income tax in Dubai?
Not on salaries or wages. GOV.UK confirms the UAE has no income tax on employment income, though other taxes and duties exist. Take advice on your UK tax position before you go.
How long is probation in the UAE?
No more than six months under federal labour law. The employer must give 14 days' written notice to end your contract during probation, and resigning in probation has notice rules and can trigger a one-year work permit ban.
Do I need my degree attested for a job in Dubai?
For most professional roles, yes, because MoHRE's skilled classification requires an attested qualification. For a UK degree that starts with certification by a UK solicitor or notary and an FCDO apostille. Ask your employer which further steps they need.
Should I pay a recruitment agency to find me a job in Dubai?
No. The UAE government says jobseekers are not required to pay recruitment agencies, because employers pay. Anyone asking you for money for a visa or medical test is not a genuine employer.
Is Glo a migration adviser?
No. We are recruiters who ran desks in Dubai and now write CVs. This guide summarises official UAE and UK government information so you can plan. Check eligibility with MoHRE, ICP or GDRFA Dubai, or a qualified UAE lawyer, before you resign or move.
