What are the legal routes to work in Qatar for a British citizen?
For UK professionals there is one main route. GOV.UK says that to work in Qatar you need a work residence permit, that you must have an employment contract to get one, and that your employer acts as your sponsor and arranges the permit and your Qatar ID card.
Glo is not a migration adviser. The table sets out the official routes so you know what to ask. Check your own eligibility with the Qatar Ministry of Interior, the Qatar Embassy in London or a qualified lawyer in Qatar.
| Route | Who it suits | Key conditions | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|

How does hiring work in Qatar?
The employer runs the process, because the employer is your sponsor. The UK government's business risk guide notes that around 90% of Qatar's population is non-Qatari and that foreign workers depend on their employer for residency rights. That is why Doha recruiters screen so hard on availability, package and visa position before experience.
Expect video interviews, then a final interview that may be in person. On our Gulf desks the shortlist was always built on the CV header first: nationality, location, package and notice. A candidate who answered those questions on page one got the call.
The rules on moving jobs have changed. The same UK guide says Qatar has, in principle, abolished exit permits for almost all workers, ended the need for a No Objection Certificate to change employer, and introduced a non-discriminatory minimum wage. GOV.UK's Living in Qatar guide adds that whether and when you can change employer depends on the type of contract you have, so read that clause before you sign.
We could not find an official skills shortage list for foreign workers in Qatar, so we do not name sectors here as officially in demand. Target roles where your qualifications and experience are hard to find locally.

Where are jobs in Qatar advertised?
Doha is a smaller market than Riyadh or Dubai, so cover every channel. Put most of your effort into LinkedIn and specialist agencies.
- LinkedIn. It lists thousands of open roles in Qatar and is where Gulf recruiters search for candidates, so your profile matters as much as your applications.
- Recruitment agencies with Gulf desks. Register with two or three that specialise in your field and tell them your move date.
- Regional job boards such as Bayt and GulfTalent, which focus on Gulf employers.
- Employer career sites. Large employers in Qatar recruit directly, often for roles they never post on job boards.

How do you apply for Qatar jobs from the UK?
You can run the whole search from the UK. Qatar keeps UTC+3 all year, so Doha is three hours ahead of the UK in winter and two hours ahead in British Summer Time. A 9am Doha call is 6am in London in January and 7am in July.
Say plainly what you need. Put Requires employer sponsorship on the CV, give a firm move date and say at first interview whether you are moving alone or with family. Family plans change the package: GOV.UK says a sponsor needs at least QAR 10,000 a month.
If an employer invites you to Doha for a final interview, check the visa with them first. GOV.UK says British citizens get a tourist visa on arrival but must get a visa in advance for any other purpose. Visitors staying more than 30 days must buy health insurance from a provider registered with the Ministry of Public Health before travelling, and your passport should have at least six months' validity on arrival.
Do not resign until you hold a signed contract and the employer has confirmed the permit process has started.

Will your UK qualifications and registration be recognised in Qatar?
GOV.UK says you will need your foreign qualifications legalised to work in Qatar. Qatar is not on the Hague Conference's list of Apostille Convention parties, so the process has three steps: the FCDO Legalisation Office in the UK, the Qatar Embassy in London, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar.
A qualification certificate must first be certified by a UK notary or solicitor before the Legalisation Office will act on it. GOV.UK puts the standard paper service at up to 25 working days plus postage, before the embassy step, so start early.
Healthcare professionals face the most checks. The Department of Healthcare Professions at the Ministry of Public Health is the sole authority regulating healthcare practitioners in Qatar. Primary source verification of your education, training and experience, through one of its approved providers, is mandatory and must be done before you apply for registration. Teachers, engineers and other licensed professionals should ask the employer which Qatari checks apply before accepting.

What should you know about pay and contracts in Qatar?
There is no income tax on salaries or wages paid in Qatar, and the UK has a double taxation agreement with Qatar so the same income is not taxed in both countries. Compare offers net, and take advice on your UK tax position before you go.
Generally only Qatari citizens can claim a state pension, but if you have worked in Qatar you may be entitled to an end-of-service gratuity from your employer. Check how the contract calculates it.
Your employer handles your residence permit and can renew it through the Ministry of Interior's Metrash app. Check the contract for the term, notice period, health cover, housing, flights and the clause on changing employer.

How long does it take to get a job in Qatar from the UK?
There is no published standard time, because the employer controls most of the steps. This is the order they happen in.
Ask the employer for its own timeline at offer stage, and do not book removals until your entry visa is confirmed.
- Before you apply: rebuild your CV for the Gulf, update LinkedIn and start legalising your degree certificate.
- Applications and interviews: video interviews, then a final interview that may be in Doha.
- Offer and contract: agree the package, contract term, notice and start date in writing.
- Permit process: the employer sponsors you; you complete the medical exam and give fingerprints, and the employer arranges the work residence permit and Qatar ID.
- Arrival: GOV.UK warns that if you leave Qatar while the permit is being processed, the application will be rejected and you will need to reapply.
- Settling in: you need your Qatar ID for banking, accommodation and medical treatment.

What should you check before you accept a Qatar offer?
Read the FCDO travel advice before you sign. At the time of writing it does not advise against travel to Qatar, but it reports strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran against US military and civilian infrastructure in a number of locations across the region, including Qatar, since 8 July 2026, says there is a risk of more attacks, and warns of possible flight cancellations and airspace closures. The advice changes, so check the current version before you sign and again before you travel.
Know the rules on debt and leaving. GOV.UK says that if you have unpaid loans or financial commitments you may be prevented from leaving Qatar. When you leave for good, you must cancel your residency, settle all debts, close accounts and check there is no travel ban against you, and get a Certificate of Good Conduct from the Ministry of Interior first, because it is very hard to get once you have left.

FAQ
Working in Qatar: common questions
Can British citizens work in Qatar?
Yes, with a job offer. You need a work residence permit, which needs an employment contract, and your employer acts as your sponsor and arranges the permit and your Qatar ID.
Do I need a job offer before moving to Qatar?
Yes. The work residence permit depends on an employment contract with a sponsoring employer, so the offer comes first.
Can I work in Qatar on the visa on arrival?
No. GOV.UK says British citizens can get a tourist visa on arrival, but anyone travelling for any purpose other than tourism must get a visa in advance. Work needs the employer-sponsored work residence permit.
Can I change jobs in Qatar?
Usually, depending on your contract. The UK government says Qatar has, in principle, ended the need for a No Objection Certificate to change employer. GOV.UK also says whether and when you can change depends on your type of contract, so read that clause before you sign.
Do I need an exit permit to leave Qatar?
Most workers no longer do. The UK government says Qatar has, in principle, abolished exit permits for almost all workers. Unpaid debts or a travel ban can still stop you leaving.
Do I need my degree legalised for Qatar?
Yes. GOV.UK says you will need your foreign qualifications legalised to work there. The steps are the FCDO Legalisation Office, the Qatar Embassy in London, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar.
Is there income tax in Qatar?
Not on salaries or wages, according to GOV.UK. The UK has a double taxation agreement with Qatar, and you should take advice on your UK tax position before you move.
